We’re excited to announce that on December 12th we’ll have the pleasure of hosting Dr Edith M. Humphrey as a speaker in our Light From the Church on the Hill lecture series in memory of our beloved Metropolitan Theodosius.

C. S. Lewis is known both for his cogent thinking regarding the Christian faith, and for the joy that he expresses in encountering that faith.  His fictional work is informed both by careful thought and exuberant joy, and thus appeals to both the imagination and the mind. In this discussion, we will trace his use of  complementary images, or story-lines, as he draws us into the mystery of atonement  in his stories of Narnia and in his adult fiction, Till We have Faces

Edith Mary Humphrey is the William F. Orr Professor Emerita of New Testament at Pittsburgh Theological Seminary, and a devoted member of St. Nicholas Parish, McKees Rocks. Before coming to Pittsburgh, she taught at several Canadian universities, serving as Dean for Augustine College, Ottawa, while also serving as music director and organist for St. George Anglican Church, Ottawa. Married to her husband Chris for 48 years, and an Orthodox convert since 2009, she is a mother of three daughters and sons-in-law, and by February will have 23 grandchildren. Since her retirement in January 2021, she has continued to teach in various milieux, write, and speak frequently in Christian and academic contexts. She is the author of numerous articles and eleven books, including Further Up and Further In: Orthodox Conversations on Scripture and Theology with C. S. Lewis, her children’s novel Beyond the White Fence, and her most recent publication Mediation and the Immediate God: Scriptures, the Church, and Knowing God. She is anticipating the publication of another children’s novel Down the Valley, this winter.

The lecture here at St John’s will follow a look into the writings of C.S. Lewis and discuss his presentation of the mystery of the Atonement. If you’re interested in learning more about Dr. Humphrey visit her website https://edithmhumphrey.com/
